Flashcards and Flapjacks Club offers something new for off-campus students

By Marissa Soto

The Master’s University Off-Campus Flashcard Club (OCFCC) has expanded its horizons this semester by rebranding as the OC Flashcards and Flapjacks Club.

The premise of the club revolves around the flashcards each student brings. With a verse or two on an index card, the club members are encouraged to memorize their verse of choice and annotate their notecard. At the meetings, students share what they have learned and gleaned from the Word in order to encourage and exhort one another. Throughout the week, students keep each other accountable to continue to meditate on Scripture by asking the question: “Do you have your flashcard?”

Originally, the club was an unofficial group that never had a meeting place. It was only a theoretical club that people could join in name simply by having a flashcard. But this academic school year, the OCFCC began to have regular gatherings.

The 2023 fall semester was an intimate group that met in the Oaks Lounge early on Friday mornings before chapel with the occasional coffee and donuts. But in order to foster more community, the group decided to provide a more consistent meal in the form of flapjacks.

For the spring, the club will provide pancakes cooked by the off-campus resident assistants (RA).

“The conversations we share is my favorite part because others encourage me with their verses and challenge me to think of biblical ideas that I have not thought of before. Now the upside is we do it while cooking and eating pancakes,” said Jonathan Lopez, an OC men’s RA.

The first official club day was January 26, but the club is always accepting and welcoming new members. OC Flashcards and Flapjacks meets every Friday in the Oaks Lounge at 7:30 a.m. For more updates about the club, visit @tmuoffcampus on Instagram.
