Devotional: Being known by God

By Serena Jeypaul, Staff Writer

*Read Psalm 103.*

Think about how many people God has created throughout the course of the world— how many people have come and gone, and how many will be in the future… it’s hard to even imagine.

And, now for the amazing part: There’s no name that God forgets.

Not only does God remember our very existence, but He intimately knows the intertwinings of each one of our lives… the hairs that have fallen from our heads, every one of our passing thoughts, the number of tears we’ve shed…

God remembers things about us that even we forget or overlook. He cares so deeply for us and rather than Him forgetting us, we often forget to remember Him even though He should be the most significant part of our lives.

It’s an amazing thing to ponder not only that God knows us, but also on how He has given us above and beyond what we deserve by choosing to crown us, a finite people, with His absolute best — with His “steadfast love and mercy” as declared by David in Psalm 103:4.

Psalm 103:13 states, “As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear Him.”

If we think back to our childhoods, there are some things we might recall about ourselves or what we did. However, there are probably more things that have escaped our memories or that we had no concept of to begin with. Typically, when we want to know something about ourselves from our past, we look to the people in our lives like our parents who were watching over us back then to remind us.

The picture of a father caring for his child, of knowing his child intimately, of using his superior knowledge not for harm, but for the child’s best interest, is something that still remains true in our relationship with our Heavenly Father today. He will never cease to keep watch over us or fail to remind us of how He’s valued us according to His grace.

This should cause us to trust in the Lord all the more as well as wrestle against our temptation to trust in ourselves as Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us,“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths”.

We can be comforted by the fact that our Heavenly Father welcomes us to come to Him when we have questions beyond what we can answer about ourselves. He has adorned us with unwavering truths and calls us to embrace this sweet gift of being known by Him.
